How to get to TU Darmstadt

Darmstadt is located in southwest Germany in the federal state of Hesse and is part of the Rhein-Main metropolitan area. Frankfurt am Main is less than 20 miles away, and cities such as Mainz, Wiesbaden, Heidelberg and Mannheim are also nearby. Darmstadt and TU Darmstadt are well connected and easily accessible by car, train, or air.

To Darmstadt…

ICE, IC and EC trains stop at Darmstadt Station, which means it is very well connected with the German distance railway network. There are regional connections with Frankfurt am Main, Wiesbaden, Aschaffenburg, Mannheim and Heidelberg as well as Erbach and Eberbach.

Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof (main station) is a hub for tram and bus lines to the following TU locations:

Campus Lichtwiese has its own bus stop as well as an Odenwaldbahn (VIAS) train station, which connects to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (main station) via Darmstadt Nordbahnhof and Darmstadt Ostbahnhof.

You can reach Darmstadt from motorways A5 (from Frankfurt/M. – Heidelberg/Basel) and A67 (from Cologne/Wiesbaden – Mannheim). At the motorway junction ‘Autobahnkreuz Darmstadt’ take the exit towards Darmstadt/Stadtmitte.

The international airport Frankfurt Rhein-Main is located 25 km (15.5 miles) from Darmstadt. At the airport, regional bus lines depart from arrivals area B at Terminal 1 and arrivals areas D+E at Terminal 2. We recommend the express bus AirLiner (Terminals 1 and 2), which offers a convenient and fast 30-minute connection from the airport to Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof (main station), Luisenplatz and darmstadtium Congress Centre.

From Darmstadt main station and Luisenplatz, public transport trains and busses take you to the following TU campus locations.

Despite its name, Frankfurt-Hahn Airport is over 100 kilometres from Frankfurt. A shuttle bus runs from Frankfurt-Hahn to Mainz and Frankfurt Central Station or Frankfurt Airport. From there, you can continue your journey to Darmstadt by public transport.

From motorway junction ‘Autobahnkreuz Darmstadt’, follow the signs towards the city centre (Darmstadt/Stadtmitte) on Rheinstraße/B26 into the City-Ring-Tunnel.

In the City-Ring-Tunnel, take the exit left, then turn left at the next traffic light onto Kirchstraße. Continue to the second light and turn into Alexanderstraße until you reach the entrance to the Schlossgarage/Karolinenplatz multi-storey car park on the left.

By public transport

From Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof (main railway station), you can take bus lines F (Oberwaldhaus), H (Kranichstein Kesselhutweg), K (Alfred-Messel-Weg) or tram lines 2 (TU Lichtwiese/Campus) and 3 (Lichtenbergschule). Get off at Schloss. The TU entrance building karo 5 is just a few minutes’ walk from the stop at Karolinenplatz.

In the City-Ring-Tunnel, take the exit left, then at the end of Hügelstraße, bear right at the traffic light onto Nieder-Ramstädter Straße. Follow the road for about 1km (0.6 miles), turn left onto Heinrichstraße and follow the signs to TU-Lichtwiese.

By public transport

To get to Campus TU Lichtwiese by public transport, take the bus to TU Lichtwiese/Campus, or the Odenwaldbahn (VIAS) to Darmstadt TU-Lichtwiese Bahnhof.

From Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof (main railway station)

Take bus tram line 2 towards TU Lichtwiese to the final stop at TU Lichtwiese/Campus (on Saturday and Sunday the final stop of tram line 2 is Merck-Stadion) The trip takes approximately 17 minutes. Another option is bus line L (TU Lichtwiese/Campus) from the stops Luisenplatz or Schloss.

From Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (main railway station)

Every two hours, respectively at each hour in the afternoon and early evening RB 82 (Odenwaldbahn) travels directly from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof to Darmstadt TU-Lichtwiese station in approximately 25 minutes.

In the City-Ring-Tunnel, take the exit left, then at the end of Hügelstraße, bear right at the traffic light onto Nieder-Ramstädter Straße. Follow the road for about 1 km (0.6 miles), turn left onto Heinrichstraße and then another left onto Schnittspahnstraße, where the Botanischer Garten is located.

The Campus Botanischer Garten is easily accessible via the Botanical Garden/Vivarium bus stop with bus line L (direction TU Lichtwiese/Campus) from the Luisenplatz or Schloss bus stops.

From motorway junction ‘Autobahnkreuz Darmstadt’, follow the signs towards the city centre Darmstadt/Stadtmitte on Rheinstraße/B26 into the City-Ring-Tunnel.

In the tunnel, take the exit left, then at the end of Hügelstraße, bear left at the traffic light onto Kirchstraße. At the second traffic light bear onto Alexanderstraße, which turns into Dieburger Straße later. The Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Haus is in the Dieburger Straße 241 right handed.

From the central railway station you can take the bus line F (direction Oberwaldhaus) until Fasanerie. The bus stop is directly in front of the guesthouse.

From motorway junction ‘Autobahnkreuz Darmstadt’, follow the signs towards the city centre Darmstadt/Stadtmitte on Rheinstraße/B26 into the City-Ring-Tunnel.

In the tunnel, take the exit left, then at the end of Hügelstraße, bear right at the traffic light onto Nieder-Ramstädter Straße. Follow the road for about 1.5 km (1 mile), then turn left onto Lichtwiesenweg – directly across from tram stop Hochschulstadion. The guest house is the fifth building on the right.

By public transport

From the central railway station, you can take the tram (e.g. lines 2,and 3) or the bus (e.g. lines F, H, K) to Luisenplatz in the city centre. Change to tram lines 2 or 9 (direction of Böllenfalltor) and get off at Hochschulstadion. The guest house is just a few steps away.

Alternatively, you can also travel directly to Campus Lichtwiese from the main railway station by train or tram line line 2 (direction of TU Lichtwiese/Campus). However, the walk to the guest house from there takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

From motorways A5/ A67, take the exit Darmstadt/Stadtmitte at the motorway junction ‘Darmstädter Kreuz’ and follow the signs to Griesheim on B26/Wilhelm-Leuschner-Straße. Pass both motorway bridges, then turn left at the crossroads onto Flughafenstraße and follow the signs to August-Euler-Flugplatz.

By public transport

The August-Euler-Airfield is located in Griesheim, which is well connected by tram. From the central railway station, either take tram lines 1,2,3,5 or bus lines F, H, K, or take a short walk to the stop Berliner Allee. From there, take tram lines 4 or 9 to Flughafenstraße. Walk straight ahead on Flughafenstraße until you reach Walter-Georgii-Platz.
